Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is a 2020 platform game, developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision.
The latest installment of the Crash Bandicoot series has been out for some time now and many people have responded positively to it. They also went to go back and add new levels in order to tie up any loose ends, which means the plot is fully fleshed out now.
This game follows Crash Bandicoot and Coco as they recover the all-powerful Quantum Masks in order to prevent Dr. Neo Cortex and Dr. Nefarious Tropy from taking over the multiverse.
They’re indirectly helped out by their old enemy Dingodile and an adventurous alternative-dimension version of Crash’s old girlfriend Tawna.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s about Time is a platform game where you play as one of Crash or Coco who are trying to save the multiverse from Cortex and Nefarious.
This game has a linear map with levels labeled as “dimensions.” You can switch between Crash and Coco anytime you like.
In the options menu you can change the game style between “Modern” and “Classic”. Default is “Modern”, so that players always will return to the latest checkpoint.
The other play style is “Retro” mode and it works by giving the player a limited number of lives. They can then collect more throughout the level.
If the player’s last life is lost, the game will restart from the beginning. It doesn’t affect difficulty or reward progress.
The gameplay is third person and occasionally you’ll be running towards the camera.
Crash and Coco have a wide repertoire of moves, including jumping and double jumping, a spinning attack, crawling, sliding and taking to the ground in an airborne slide. They can also grind on rails or hang off the sidings of walls.
Spread throughout each level are different types of crates. These will generally contain Wumpa Fruit which grant an extra life if you collect 100 of them in the Retro stylistic mode.
Other crates contain an Aku Aku mask, which protects the player character from contact with a singular enemy or hazard.
Collecting three consecutive Aku Aku masks will grant the player character temporary invincibility from all dangers except falling down bottomless pits.
You might assume that the player character is invincible but you’re not – in fact, you’re able to automatically kill enemies within a certain radius. In each level there’s a ‘Bonus’ section accessible by jumping on platforms bearing yellow question marks.
Bonus areas consist of short, 2D levels in which the player must break all the crates.
Dying in a Bonus area doesn’t deplete a life in Retro mode, and the player will spawn next to the Bonus Platform when they die.
