The Outer Worlds is an action-adventure video game featuring a first-person perspective. In the beginning there’s a tutorial stage of the game where you create your character and unlock your ship which acts as the central hub space for this game.
Though the player cannot control their ship directly, it serves as a fast travel point to access different areas in the game and acts as the player’s persistent inventory space.
The companions allow you to gain the support of non-player characters and beings that assist your party. They are integral in combat situations, as they will not only provide tactical support, but also fight to stay alive.
Each companion has their own individual skills and special attacks and they can also develop their own skill specialization.
When exploring you can bring up to two companions with you which will have a drastic effect on your story. You also have numerous dialogue decisions that will both direct your character’s actions and affect the plot.
They can react to people or other NPCs in various ways, including acting as an hero, maniacally or amateurishly.
The game is set in an alternate future in which McKinley did not die at the Pan-American Exposition, leading to different consequences.
With opportunities for employment, the chance to escape their past, and a new beginning in their future.
There are many weapon types in the game, along with three ammo types: light, heavy and energy. Many weapons can also be further customized.
As the player advances they gain more abilities and learn more by leveling up. In order to unlock new skills players will have to spend points that they have earned, which they can then transfer to a skill tree and unlock those abilities as well.
The player can develop their technical skills, which are further divided into three categories: Science, Medical, and Engineering. Players can also use a shrink ray to shrink down an enemy or create shields.
The player has a comprehensive skill tree that allows them to unlock new perks as they level. They can also enter “Tactical Time Dilation”, which slows down time and reveals opponents’ health statistics, increasing combat efficiency
As the player leads their companions, they improve their strength and resilience. The player will also have a “flaw” that may occur if they fail in certain segments of gameplay.
Refusing to play by your own rules can make your life a living hell. But you also add some cool, unique aspects that can help you win.
